Activities on St Maarten for children
Family vacations can be some of our happiest and most vivid childhood memories. For parents, the idea of planning a vacation which will keep all members of the family entertained can be a bit of a nightmare.
If you’ve chartered before, you’ll know that sailing vacations are the perfect option for all ages and interests, there really is something for everyone. The Caribbean is a top destination for this reason, and St Maarten is a hidden gem for kid-friendly activities.
If you’re planning a charter vacation to St Maarten and are wondering how to keep the younger members of the group engaged and happy, don’t worry – we’ve got you! Read on for our top child-friendly activities in St Maarten.

Seaside Nature Park
Contrary to what the name suggests, this isn’t your typical nature park. This is the opportunity for you and your kids to have a real movie-moment: riding horses along the beach, even taking a dip in the waves whilst on horseback.

The good news is, you don’t need to have any equestrian experience to take part, as all trails are under the guidance of experts.

Kids as young as 5 can take part and reservation is necessary. Make sure you bring a camera, as the views from horseback are so beautiful!
If you have younger children in your party, they’re sure to love Discovery Farm. Here they can become acquainted with chickens, ducks, rabbits, ponies and mini-horses. There’s also a beachfront café for refreshments.

Le Galion Beach
Located on the French side of St Maarten, Le Galion is incredibly family-friendly. The entry to the sea is shallow and clear, perfect for little paddlers. The water is very calm and the beach is spacious enough for families to really spread out and easily keep an eye on young explorers.

The downside is that there isn’t much natural shade at Le Galion, however umbrellas and deck chairs are readily available for hire. The upside is that there’s a volleyball court on the beach, so family tournaments are a breeze. It’s also located very close to the Butterfly Farm, which takes us to our next top tip…
Butterfly Farm
Once the family has tired of the beach (if that’s even possible in St Maarten), head over to the Butterfly Farm. This activity is perfect for kid of all ages, and the 20 minutes guided tour through the gardens is the perfect length to keep everyone engaged. It’s also a great way to sneak a little education into your vacation, as you’ll learn about the life cycles of butterflies, conservation and how to make a butterfly farm!

At Butterfly Farm, hundreds of incredible, colorful butterflies and moths have free roam of the netted gardens. If you’re wearing bright colors, don’t be surprised if you’re mistaken for a flower! Kids can also carefully touch the butterflies, under the guidance of the staff.

There’s a shaded refreshment area and a giftshop, for all of your butterfly souvenirs.

Rhino Safari
Another slightly misleading name… there are no wild animals on this adventure! Instead, you can pilot your own 10-foot, 2-seater motorboat! The Rhino Riders take you through St Maarten’s incredible waterways. The tour ends with the opportunity to swim and snorkel. This is a really exhilarating activity for the thrill-seekers in your group.

Fort Louis
This is the perfect way to fill an afternoon and encourage the kids to burn off a little energy. Climbing the steep stone steps is not for the faint-hearted, but you’ll be rewarded with incredible views across Marigot Bar and Anguilla.
This fort was originally built in 1789 to defend warehouses of local produce like coffee, salt and rum. Today it’s an excellent vantage point and photo opportunity. And of course there’s a canon at the top, which is always a winner with curious kids.

Loterie Farm
It’s easy to spend a full day at this sprawling nature reserve. Whether you’re an active individual, or prefer to chill out, there’s something for everyone.
There’s a modern pool and deck in the center of the resort, where daybeds or cabanas can be rented for the ultimate relaxation experience.

Meanwhile, the adrenaline junkies can take to the zip lines and rope courses dotted around the complex. There’s also the option of a guided hike through the preserve.

There are several award-winning restaurants and lounges to choose from, as well as live music every Saturday evening.
